How do I register my school?

To be a registered school you need to complete the simple registration form.  There is a nominal registration and subscription fee.  This varies according to the type of school and its location.  Please see our Scale of Charges for up to date information. Registration lasts for 12  months. There is a registration form on the web site.

How do I register a programme of learning to be validated?

Once you have identified a programme of learning you apply for this to be validated by the CBCU Validating Body.  Details on how to do this are provided in our document called Policy for Creating Modules.  A copy can be found on the web site.  Once this has been completed those hours of learning are registered against the child’s name on our records and in their passport.  This then counts towards graduation.

What does a CBCU programme or module of learning look like?

In summary the learner must have a clear learning intention and your proposal must identify the attitudes, skills, ways of learning and experiences to be gained by the pupils in completing this programme of learning.  It must have a learning intention and be more than a recreational activity.  It must also identify the number of hours of learning that will be accumulated.  Schools need to keep very accurate records of the hours of learning as this is the evidence against which awards are gained by students.

Can I ask for my school play to be validated as it is performed out of school hours?

It is very doubtful that activities such as a school play performances will be possible to validate.  The same answer would apply to school sports teams and swimming for leisure type of activities.

Do children have to pass tests or exams?

No, awards gained are purely on the number of hours of learning.

How do children get their passports?

Once the school has registered and successfully submitted a programme of learning for validation the school can recruit children to the course.  Details about the children need to be registered with the CBCU and against this information children receive an individually numbered passport.

What happens if a child loses a passport?

A child and parent can apply to CBCU for a replacement and there will be a charge to cover costs.

How does a child use a passport?

Children present their passport at the end of the course and the number of hours is recorded in the passport by the course tutor/ teacher.  A copy of this information must be provided to CBCU so the hours can be credited against the child’s name and count towards graduation.

What is a Learning Destination?

A Learning Destination such as a museum or art gallery that is registered with CBCU.  A child visiting a Learning Destination can have the visa section of the passport stamped and this recognises the visit to that place.  No formal learning has to be completed for a Visa stamp to be issued.  If the Learning Destination provided validated courses the hours of learning accumulated in that activity count towards graduation and they are recorded in the front section of the passport.

Will CBCU provide my school with funding or staff?

No.  CBCU is essentially a organization that validates learning and issues awards.  It also supports the strategic overall development of CU provision in the City.

Will CBCU share information with my school?

Yes, we will share your school information with you so long as you remain a registered CBCU school.  It will not be shared with other schools.  We have set up the database so that it is easy to access information in a way that is helpful to you.  Information can be retrieved against any number of criteria, such as age groups, modules, dates, hours of learning etc.  This information will be helpful in populating the SEF and providing summaries of information to stakeholders such as governors, parents and inspectors.
